WILLIAM WEWER
(1947-99) was a co-founder of Wewer & Lacy, LLP. Mr. Wewer had a distinguished
professional career of over 25 years of experience as a lawyer for nonprofit
organizations. Mr. Wewer’s extensive experience in dealing with the practical
issues which confront nonprofit organizations – such as obtaining and
maintaining tax exemption; dealing with unrelated business income tax; travel,
insurance and financial (“TIF”) rules; state charitable registration
and state fundraising disclosure; justifying executive compensation; establishing
perimeters for lobbying and political activity; obtaining a low-cost nonprofit
postal permit; and successfully appealing an unfavorable ruling of the Internal
Revenue Service or the U.S. Postal Service – have left Wewer & Lacy,
LLP’s files with an abundance of knowledge and legal firepower that cannot
be matched by other nonprofit law firms.
Mr. Wewer received a B.A., with honors from Pomona College
in California in 1970. He obtained his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the National
Law Center at George Washington University, also with honors, where he was a
member of the Order of the Coif. Mr. Wewer was admitted to practice in the District
of Columbia, California and other jurisdictions. He was a member of numerous
Federal Circuits of Appeals and District Courts, including the United States
Supreme Court.
A frequent panelist on exempt organizations for continuing
legal education, Mr. Wewer served on the Exempt Organizations and Charitable
Activities Committee of the National Bar Institute in 1996. He is author of
Avoiding Disaster: Land Mines on the Nonprofit Front, a nonprofit management
handbook. He served as a member of the Subcommittee on Exempt Organization of
the American Bar Association.
